Introduction

Mint Building Services successfully delivered comprehensive mechanical and electrical (M&E) services for the redevelopment of 21 Keppel Road, a historically significant colonial-era building in Singapore. Now home to BeyondX, this space serves as a dynamic Innovation Hub, integrating cutting-edge technology with Singapore’s rich architectural heritage.

BeyondX is a platform where forward-thinkers push the boundaries of what is possible, pioneering advancements in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and emerging technologies.

Powering an innovative future

A major electrical infrastructure upgrade was essential to support BeyondX’s initiatives, particularly an electric vehicle (EV) charging company housed within the hub. Given the rapid advancements in sustainable transport and technology, Mint engineered a robust and scalable power system. High-capacity transformers and smart grid technology were installed to handle increased electrical loads efficiently.

Preserving heritage while enabling innovation

21 Keppel Road, formerly the Customs Operations Command, is a narrow three-storey structure built in the 1940s. Featuring a Streamline Moderne-inspired façade, terracotta hip roof, and metal-framed glass windows, the building’s historic features were carefully maintained while upgrading its infrastructure to support BeyondX’s high-tech ecosystem.

To ensure a seamless integration of modern systems, Mint meticulously planned and implemented advanced M&E solutions. Concealed wiring and ventilation were incorporated to preserve the building’s aesthetic integrity. Heritage-sensitive lighting was carefully selected to complement the original architecture while structural reinforcements were put in place to accommodate contemporary infrastructure without compromising historical details.

Efficient execution on tight timelines

With work commencing in March 2024 and completing by mid-year, Mint meticulously coordinated all M&E disciplines, leveraging in-house expertise and strong subcontractor management to ensure seamless execution. The redevelopment of BeyondX Innovation Hub at 21 Keppel Road successfully balanced heritage conservation with modern operational demands, setting a benchmark for adaptive reuse. The revitalised space preserves Singapore’s architectural heritage while fostering innovation through summits, hackathons, and networking sessions that connect global industry leaders and visionaries.
